Geographical indications that are used to designate a product as originated in a particular area, as long as the quality, reputation or other characteristics of the product depend essentially on the geographical environment in which it is produced.
The protection is granted since the competent national office declares the appellation of origin itself. It persists over time as logn as the conditions that determined this declaration are maintained.
Only producers, manufacturers or craftsmen of the respective locality or region may use the origin designation and the respective office granted authorization to use for periods of ten years, renewable.
This recognition can also be filed for those that have been declared as such in their country of origin thereby they can also be protected in Ecuador.
